THE MEMBERS RUN THE UNION!
A truly democratic union, AFSCME is run by its’ members. Every member has a vote in the election of local union officers, and board members. Each local has its’ own constitution and members vote at meetings to determine policy, activities, and local dues structure. Members also vote on contract approval or rejction. These rights are guaranteed by the International Union Constitution and the Bill of Rights for members.

American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees

AFSCME members are workers employed by cities, states, counties, hospitals, the federal government and non-profit agencies, and other private employers across the United States.Chartered in 1936, AFSCME has 1.3 million members. AFSCME is:

The largest union of secretarial and clerical workers with over 200,000 members.

The largest union of social workers with over 100,000 workers.

The largest union of correction officers with 75,000 members.

The representative choice for over 325,000 health care and hospital workers and over 100,000 school employees.

The largest union of highway employees, mental health workers, inspectors, employment counselors, park and recreation workers, and many other occupations.

Michigan AFSCME Council 25 is some 60,000  plus members strong.

despite the vast diversity of its’ membership, workers of virtualy all public service occupations( as well as non-profit and private sector workers) can be assured they will find a specialized voice in for their needs within AFSCME.
